In a possible sign that the “comic book to movie” gods have listened to the crying and wailing from moviegoers this year, ComicBook.com is reporting that 20th Century Fox has decided to remove the sequel from their list of scheduled releases, even though they did initially insist that the sequel was going to be made and that the cast member were coming back to reprise their roles.
Fantastic Four 2 was originally scheduled for a June 9, 2017 release date, even before the first film hit theaters. With virtually all superhero movies performing well at the box office recently, Fox probably felt confident at the time that Fantastic Four would follow suit. However, Fantastic Four wound up being the rare superhero movie flop. Fantastic Fouronly grossed $56 million domestically and $167 million worldwide on a production budget of $120 million.
It’s unclear if Fox removing Fantastic Four 2 from their schedule means the film is indefinitely canceled or if it will be rescheduled for a later date to allow more time for Fox to plan a strategy for what comes next.
So does this please you? Are you holding out more hope that perhaps Marvel Studios will be able to get this property back under their own umbrella?
