No Second Season For Jessica Jones?

jessica-jones-will-there-be-a-second-season-740693Netflix and Marvel have had a bang up time together. First with Daredevil and now with Jessica Jones, they have managed to craft two series which show more of the “underbelly” of the superhero world. However there may be a change.

Within days of when Daredevil premiered it was given the green light for a second season. Jessica Jones has been out for some time now, and while the reception has been equal to that of Daredevil, there has been absolute silence in regards to a possible second season.

Melissa Rosenberg, speaking to Variety, had this to say:

“Marvel has a lot going on. So does Netflix. So I don’t know if a second season fits into this schedule, when, whether or not we’ll get one. I don’t know any of that.”

As anyone who’s watched the series will know, it leaves a lot of loose threads, setting up a potential second arc in which the titular hero investigates her own origins. But perhaps the problem is that any sequel would necessarily have a vastly different style; with Kilgrave out of the picture, it would be pretty hard to create such a successful sense of psychological horror.  Jessica Jones Season 2 would be a very different beast.

Thankfully, of course, this is nowhere near the last we’ll be hearing of Jessica Jones herself. She’s sure to crop up in the Luke Cage series (it does star her boyfriend, after all!), and has a guaranteed slot in The Defenders. So it’s entirely possible that those loose threads will still be tied together.

So does this mean that Marvel has bitten off more than they can chew by trying to do too much universe building between movies and television? By possibly not having a second season of Jessica Jones does it mean that they can better focus their creative energies on those properties which are already proven to be successful?

  1. Of course, my knee-jerk reply is “More Jessica Jones please!”… it is sooo well done, I loved it. But the stated concerns with a Season 2 are legitimate, and I’d have to think that the show creators (as well as Marvel in general) would know how best to proceed. Sounds like they’ve got a lot of plans, and they seem to be firing on all cylinders. So I’ll just sit back, watch it all play out, and reap the benefits (as a viewer). Ahh, these are good days…
